Well it seems Pol is feeling sorry for him/her self over at westmichiganpolitics, and rightly so.
There is no ground swell to reform the Michigan Bicameral system. Why?
As west Michiganders we have seen this before. Not this particular idea, but many like it.
Get your pitchforks out from the closet, and tell your children the tales of how many dragons we have slew. We demanded many panaceas in the past that have proven to be false or ill conceived notions.
My father has often regaled me on the movement for a state sales tax. I believe his sincerity when discussing how he and other voters at that time were told that the monetary ailes of Michigan would be put to an end by making a tax on sold goods, in lieu of paying a property tax. We now have both.
As for the unicameral Michigan, I do not hate the idea. But do not mistake me for a supporter of this bill. While it is true that the money harvested from such a venture would be substantial, you would have to be foolish to believe it is not already being eyed by the greedy house.
After the dismantling of the senate, the yet standing state house will move like ninjas in the night with the windfall of funds brought on by such an action. Before the final vote is cast the booty will be soaked from the state with the same vigor that made the tobacco settlement instantaneously disappear. You see I have heard no mention, and would venture a guess that there is no allocation for the funds saved in this bill. When posed with this notion a circulator of the petition claimed it to be "A small matter". You see, the spoils of the battle had suddenly become irrelevant, for they only want to slay dragons with trusty pitchforks!
